Who We Are

Our History

Located in the heart of Katoomba, the grounds of St Canice's have views of the Jamison Valley, a spectacular section of the Blue Mountains National Park.

We have been nestled in the Blue Mountains for over 100 years, having been established by the Sisters of Charity in 1901. Since then, we have provided quality Catholic education for children from Kindergarten to Year 6.

Our school was founded by Sister Dominica McMahon who led the school for a number of years. Our current Principal, Mr Mark Geerligs, has been a school Principal for more than 29 years. He started at St Canice's in 2014. Mr Geerligs has a particular interest in linking the creative arts with other curriculum areas.

Our staff bring a wealth of experience to our school, and are continuously developing their own knowledge and skills through professional learning opportunities.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide a quality education for all the students in our school, that is Christ-centred, holistic and reflects Gospel values. Students, teachers, parents and pastors all work together towards the common goal of ‘Growth Through Love and Learning’.

Our Philosophy of Learning

We live out our mission through our philosophy of learning. We believe that children learn best when:

  • they are in an environment that nurtures the formation of Gospel values in the school community, and where each individual is affirmed in their uniqueness
  • they are engaged in learning that is meaningful, dynamic and personally challenging
  • they are immersed in a learning culture that encourages risk-taking, perseverance and responsibility. And that embraces the opportunity to explore the ever-changing world in a just, happy and safe environment
  • they interact and work cooperatively, and are encouraged to share ideas, clarify their understandings and reflect on their learning.
